The Myth of the Happy Ending

I read Terry Pratchett books mainly because I like to laugh.  I also read them because he's a master at inserting raw truth into his stories.  Recently, I've been reading "Witches Abroad" which details an adventure created by a fairy godmother's mad obsession with happy endings...at whatever cost.  This little gem got my attention:

Early Relationship Talk: How Much is too Much?

We've all been there:  on a first date, things are going well and then...TMI.  Your date crosses the line with a taboo topic, talk about an ex, details on his or her political or religious preference, maybe even a few tears (oh yes, it's happened).

So how much information is too much information at the beginning of a relationship?  What are your personal rules?

    Ouch

In honor of my extreme need to grace you all with TMI, and also to continue my ongoing war against uterine invaders, I got an IUD today.

    OUCH.

Holy crap, ouch.  But no babies for five years...totally worth it.

There are some risks associated with this kind of birth control, and while technically any woman can get one, most doctors will "screen" you with a few questions first.  My doc was pretty great throughout, so if any of you are interested in an IUD, do some research and check with the old ob/gyn.

Er...what did you do this weekend?

    The First Thanksgiving

What, you thought maybe I'd talk about the Pilgrims and the Indians?  About succotash and funny hats?  Puh-leeze.  That's so 17th century.

Instead, I'd like to mention that this will be my first Thanksgiving without bird, pig or cow.  I'm actually really looking forward to it.

What are you looking forward to this Thanksgiving?

Whereupon My Brain Rotted and Died: New Moon is the Devil

When Carly sent me an IM at work that read something like, "Will you please go see New Moon with me? Please? PLEASE? PPPPPLLEEEEEEAAAASSSSSSSSEEEEEEE?????????????????" I thought maybe she wanted someone to go see this new atrocity "film" with her. And though my heart and brain protested, "Really? Are you sure? We're pretty certain we will either cease to function or just become stupid if you make us go," I thought it could be a good opportunity to a) help a friend out and b) gather some awesome, snarky fodder for the ole blog.

    And boy, was I right.

    Bringing Up Baby: Fashion Edition

Bringing Up Baby is a fantastic Rom Com from 1938 starring Katherine Hepburn and the ever-handsome Cary Grant.  The film has it all:  silly characters, a case of mistaken leopard identity (the "Baby" in the movie), and a funny dog whose bone burying habits cause mayhem.  Sometimes films from back in the day can be a tad slow or wearisome, but Bringing Up Baby is quick, with plenty of physical comedy and witty banter throughout.  Here are a couple of my favorite scenes:

Sing the cat off the roof.

Cary Grant looking hot in a skimpy robe.

Of course, being the late 1930's, the style does not disappoint.  Hepburn looks so tiny with her cinched waist and flowing gowns.  It's so glamourous, and yet the clothes have an air of comfort or breeziness about them. Here's my take on Bringing Up Baby.

    That Certain Age...

I'm glad I'm at that certain age where...

...a "girl's night" means trashy TV, pizza and wine with good friends in the comfort of someone's living room.  Make-up optional.

What about you?  Finish this sentence:  "I'm glad I'm at that certain age where..."

    Favorite Romantic Novels

What's your favorite romantic novel?  And I ain't talkin' Harlequin Romances, where they plow each other's gardens and she touches his turgid member.  I mean like, the great love stories of all time in book form.

I love Jane Eyre.  I love her quiet love, the way she sees the goodness in Rochester, even when he's a blustering idiot.  An oldie but a goodie.

I also love The Giant's House by Elizabeth McCracken.  It's about a librarian who develops a soft spot (love, even?) for the town's giant.  It's so beautifully written, you can't tell where the lines between frienship and love blur.

I actually also loved The Time Traveler's Wife (book, not movie).  I love that it's really a story about her disguised as a story about him.  Hmmm...methinks I need a re-read.

What's your favorite romantic written story (no movies allowed!)?
